Harriet Nahanee died for Eagleridge

“These people give me a headache!” Harriet Nahanee said with exasperation. She was referring to the all-white West Vancouver residents of the Coalition to Save Eagleridge Bluffs.
“Can I get you a coffee,” I asked her. “Yes,” Harriet replied, sitting under the tarp that Kevin, our camp manager, had set up for visitors to the tent city at the bluffs set up by Betty Krawcyzk.
We were fighting to stop the madness: the highway improvement project on the Sea To Sky highway to Whistler built for the Olympics. In a nutshell, the government had hired a giant American construction company to cut a stretch of highway through the pristine mountains above Horseshoe Bay only to reconnect with the existing highway a little further down the road. Harriet Nahanee came with the Mohawk flag and reminded everyone that the land isn’t theirs to destroy. She was treated with a mixture of obsequiousness and condescension, which is done so well by the British and French expats living on the mountain. The company men just snickered at the absurdity of what Harriet was trying to explain. Her mention of the BNA Act and the Proclamation of 1763 were simply laughed at as was her reference to the Magna Carta, all of which she explained can be used in a legal battle to give Indians their land back.
“You can’t be serious!” was the look on their faces listening to her as she said that she has “sovereign immunity” and cannot be charged by the unrightful owners of the land.
But Harriet was deadly serious and her look of determination was steely on her noble face. Her long, silver ponytail shimmered in the sun. I said something that made her laugh and suddenly her joy came bursting through, only to disappear as she started to cough violently. She took out her inhaler and pushed the button.
Pretty women and grandmothers vied to get their pictures taken with this famous Indian elder. As she smiled she reminded me of a small girl. When the West Vancouver police came with their crocodile tears to arrest us, Harriet just said “sovereign immunity” and told me to say the same thing, but I didn’t have the courage to use the phrase she had taught me to protect myself against the illegitimate powers of the state.
Harriet used the phrase but to no avail. She was taken to a jail for criminals and denied treatment for her health. “You can see a psychiatrist” she was told.
After being released, she died in the hospital two weeks later surrounded by her husband Ron and her children and grandchildren. Harriet Nahanee, the only protester to die at Eagleridge and the only Indian: she is stardust now.
