The article, The New Normal, Thanks to Israel, (issue 191) by Michael Nenonen was excellent.
The letter to The Republic by John Brohman was scary to say the least.
Yes, you may have stepped on some pretty big and powerful toes. Don’t be afraid to print the truth.

Dear Republic:
With the large taxes government already makes consumers pay for crude-oil products, why not just have that government buy out all of the privately owned oil companies—not to mention all privately owned tobacco and alcohol product companies—and then put all profits from such products back into the pockets of all citizens?
Also to be considered is that if the people of Earth are going to get ill or die from such products, the proceeds of all sales of these products should remain with all citizens.

Dear Republic:
I dare you to print this in full. Never have I thought it would be even worth writing to The Republic of East Vancouver. It is rage that compels me to respond to Kevin Potvin's arrogance on Critical Mass. Granted, there are a handful of cyclists who are irresponsible (as pedestrians can attest) but most drivers out there aren't angels either. In an age of climate change compounded by irresponsible population growth and urban sprawl driven by development fuelled by greed, Critical Mass is the one day of action where the automobile addicts can be educated to an alternative means of transportation. It is not a movement such as civil rights or women's equality or gay and lesbian movements. It is a reminder on how demented we are in our addiction to oil. This form of public broadcast cannot be found in radio, television or print (they’re reserved for automobile ads).
I drive and I bike. And because of social and environmental concern, I choose not to buy a car. I take public transit (as woefully inadequate as it is in this burg). I walk to work (about an hour). I rent. I am not the petty bourgoisie. Critical Mass is one evening in a month, and it's on the last Friday. Inconvenience, I agree and serious for emergency vehicles. But given the amount of cars out there every day, it's a petty and arrogant comparison on your part to mention CKNW. Hell, that radio is on daily! Talk about noise pollution!
Did you ever interview a cyclist on these rides? Have you
ever even participated on them? Are you even a journalist or some smug, arrogant capitalist who espouses the virtue of the market economy? (Bet'cha you support the war for oil too).
I read your paper for articles on social issues. You have as much on social and progressive issues as the National Post.
Hope your papers fold and trees are saved.
