It may be worth the while to go see what they’ve got at the Biltmore Cabaret, corner of Kingsway and 12th, the night of July 31. That’s the final night of a three night run of “short, sexy sketch comedy” acts. Where are sexual mores at—and where is the undermining of same—in these days of internet porn where everything imaginable is blasé before you’ve even heard of it? Burlesque is so common now that bundled up in a parka with hood and scarves and gloves and boots is the new naked. What could possibly be billed these days as sexual risqué? Might be worth seeing.
A bunch of god-damned tree hugging hippies are screaming and kicking again, this time in the Alice MacKay room, downstairs at the main public library the night of July 31. What’s got their underpants all in a knot at Greenpeace, Wilderness Committee, Forest Ethics and Friends of Clayoquat Sound is a new threat to old growth forests in Clayoquat Sound, scene of last decade’s biggest Unrest in the Forest. Seems the move on that famous and unique stand wasn’t stopped completely after all.
Here’s a strange sounding one to go see: Super Patriots and Morons, a play staged at the Freddy Wood theatre at UBC, two nights only, August 8 and 9. It was apparently banned in Zimbabwe and is presented by Amnesty International. A panel discussion follows the show. The title sounds promising enough, though the two terms seem redundant, don’t they?
Every Sunday through August is an Artful Sunday at Napier Square, Napier Street and Commercial Drive, noon to 5PM. Stroll through, it’s a multimedia visual arts market put on by people living behind closed doors on the very streets you walk down in your neighbourhood. What have they been building in there?!
I saw the end of the world and all I got was this lousy t-shirt! Something called the East Van Network of Love is holding the Apocalypse Roadshow: Cabaret for the End of the World, August 1 at 9 PM at Café deux Soleils, Commercial and 5th. There will be costumes, dark music, story telling and poetry. The end is nigh, they say, but refreshments will still be available.
Something called Canada22 will host its next meeting in the back room of the Grind Café, Main Street and King Edward, on August 5th, 7:30 to 9:30. What is Canada22 you ask? Says the canada22.org website: “Canada22 is an umbrella organization that links people and groups together to fight for social and economic justice, locally, nationally and globally. We link groups with the same social economic goals so we can work together more effectively and combine resources, insight and ideas.” Weren’t you just saying five minutes ago, “But what can I do???” There you go.
Terry Sawatzky will host an opening reception of his work August 6 at 6:30 to 8:30 at the Britannia Art Gallery, located inside Britannia Library, Napier and Commercial. It’s called Deconstruction: Classic. He will also present a slide show August 10 at 2 PM. I have no idea what to expect, but I do know that Terry has been making pretty interesting and far out works of art for a long time, and he’s likely to show a few eye-poppers.
