Dear Republic:
I have to commend your paper for having the sheer guts to publish Michael Nenonen's powerful article on Israel's persecution of the Palestinian people. I am neither Jewish nor Palestinian but I have watched the news coverage from the Middle East for over thirty years.
In my opinion, it is clear to even a casual observer that Israel, with the direct help of the United States, has established a set of conditions for the Palestinian people that can easily be viewed as a reign of terror and persecution.
As far back as the early 1980's Israel began censoring the news from the region when there were too many pictures of Palestinian children throwing stones at Israel's tanks and being killed for the effort showing up in Western media.
There has never been any doubt in my mind that Israel has established a state of brutal apartheid on one hand while still claiming the role of being a hated, persecuted minority on the other.
I can accept that Israel is hated by some. However as long as Israel has a direct pipeline to perpetual US financial and military aid up to and including the nuclear option, they are hardly persecuted.
Nenonen's observation of Obama, McCain and Clinton catering to the Jewish lobbyists reflects simple pragmatism. One reality of the US political dynamic is that alienating the Jewish vote does not get one elected president. Obama and McCain have no choice politically but to declare continued perpetual aid to Israel. Neither candidate has an electoral base centered in a Palestinian refugee camp.
I wish the Republic well after publishing the Nenonen article. Frankly, I would not be surprised if it quietly disappears from the streets of Vancouver in the next couple of weeks. This article has stepped on some pretty big and powerful toes. The Republic has shown incredible bravery. Good fortune to you.
