Allan De Genova and the politics of triangulation
"Third Way" proposals fail for not being anchored anywhere

I'm considering joining Vision Vancouver so I can vote for Al De Genova. With solid NPA credentials, De Genova's candidacy will expose Vision's attempts to present themselves as some alternative to the NPA as a mere sales pitch. Vision is simply a repackaging of the same elements that brought us the NPA. De Genova is set to triangulate Vision, just as Vision had previously triangulated COPE. In politics, "triangulation" denotes an attempt to straddle two theoretically opposing positions by proposing a third position between the two that embraces elements of both. The 1990s saw the rise of triangulation on the putative left. President Bill Clinton in the US and Prime Minister Tony Blair across in Great Britain coined the strategy. Their so-called "Third Way" politics embodied the concept, proposing a middle road between the right and the left. While President, Clinton appropriated many traditionally conservative concerns as his own. A few examples: Clinton's Welfare Bill, his Anti-Terrorism Bill, his racist anti-crack bill, his law and order "Three Strikes You're Out" bill that imprisoned hundreds of thousands of Americans on petty crime and drug charges, his support for the ongoing bombing of Iraq through much of the 1990s, his ramming through of NAFTA. . . but why dwell on the bad old days south of the border? We've got our own problems. Vancouver's municipal party Vision spent much of their term in power as "COPE-Lite" seeking a Third Way between the NPA and COPE. Like Clinton's Democrats the Blair's Labour Party, Mayor Larry Campbell and his supporters. Tim Stevenson, Jim Green and Raymond Louie rammed through policies that would have been typical of any NPA council. The Canada Line, the lowering of taxes for big business, support for corporate entertainment interests (gambling especially), support for the Olympics, support for expansion of the Convention Centre, and a refusal to actively support bringing wards to the city. There really was no issue of substance that could differentiate the NPA and Campbell's COPE Lite. In fact, while in power the NPA actively supported most of Campbell's policies. Campbell's group went on to mutate into Vision Vancouver. Any way you look at it, the end game of triangulation is a steady move to the centre. By picking a point between two imagined opposed points, you are trying to suggest your position is the centre. The great thing about this game is any two points on the political map can be triangulated leading to an increasingly homogenized political discourse. The US is the best example of this, where any review of the policies of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush Jr will turn up for more continuity than discontinuity. De Genova spent 15 or so years as an elected NPA official as that party (and for a shorter period as Larry Campbell's Vision group) helped turn the city into a real estate developer's utopia. Now De Genova will need to rebrand himself and display his inner leftist to keep up the charade. So get ready for even more empty, windy Vision rhetoric about homelessness, the need for affordable housing etc. Like their soul mates to the south, the Democrats, Vision runs from the left and governs from the right.
