Lots of new on the old street
Commercial Drive makeover keeps the street humming

Many new stores and restaurants have sprung up on Commercial Drive the last little while, many of them noteworthy and deserving of a look-see.
In geographic order from north to south, there is Bump and Grind at Venables—not so new at two years, but not previously noted in this newspaper either. More couches than chairs give this café a relaxed-at-home feel, the home of a person who plays his records for you, too.
Zawa is new name for an older restaurant formerly known as Zesty’s. The burgers here are classic, plus they’ve got a super-sized HD screen perfect for playoff hockey.
Pane Vero bakery is a very gratifying new addition to the street. That’s a real sour dough loaf they make. The place smells warm and rich. Not much further along is the new home of The Reef, a second home to the original on Main Street. Caribbean fare makes up most of the menu—perfect for shaking off the spring clouds and damp.
Ewaz has slipped into the spot between Tony’s Deli and the Pizza King and offer up a pretty nice looking range of women’s clothes and accessories. A few blocks along you come to Euro Bakery at Charles, somewhat recently taken over by a wonderful couple, she from Poland, he from Iran—they met at a language school for immigrants in Edmonton. The crepes, both savoury and sweet, are the key insider knowledge here.
Then you come to Black Dog Video, a second outlet of the Cambie Street institution. You can close your eyes here and reach out and rent the first thing you touch and know it’s going to be a great film no matter what. Further up is Paranada. It’s not new, but the name is, as is the dramatic black-trimmed and stone façade. Nicely done!
North of 1st Avenue is as transformed as south of 1st. There’s Mintage, more great looking women’s wear, and then you come to Carthage Café, a great name reminding us of those bastards in Rome. Carthage serves Tunisian cuisine—that’s a new one!
Brand new at 2nd is Giancarlo’s Sports Bar, a café with three or four screens in every direction showing all manner of sports. Then past 2nd comes Network Apparel with factory seconds, and then Waves, open 24 hours a day with free wireless and pretty good coffee too, all in a pleasing-to-the-eye Earth-tone décor.
Shuffling along past 3rd is Urban Grain Pizza, not your typical pizza slice joint but pies that looks like they’re actually good for you. At 5th you come to Timbre, a pretty upscale looking bar with drinks a tad into the non-local range of prices, and across the street is Me and Julio, a not bad after-work bar with yet more tropical theme going on inside.
It’s a lot of new for the old street. A walk up the entire 14 blocks turned up but one vacant storefront. How’d all the new one’s squeeze in?
